What you may do

You may copy, change, distribute, and perform the work, commercially included, for any purpose, with no conditions and no attribution required. The rights waived include the rights to reproduce, adapt, distribute, perform, display, communicate and translate the work, moral rights, publicity and privacy rights, rights against unfair competition, rights over the extraction, dissemination, use and reuse of data, database rights, and similar rights worldwide (section 1). The author waives them fully, permanently and irrevocably, in all territories, for the maximum duration, in any medium and for any purpose (section 2). Where any part of the waiver is not valid, it holds as far as the law allows, and a royalty-free, non transferable, non sublicensable, non exclusive, irrevocable and unconditional licence for the same uses takes its place; where that licence also fails in part, the author will not exercise the remaining rights or assert claims against the work's use (section 3).

Key limits, as the CC0 text states: trademark and patent rights held by the author are not waived, abandoned, or licensed (section 4(a)); the work is offered as is, without representations or warranties of any kind, including title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, the absence of latent or other defects, accuracy, or the presence or absence of errors (section 4(b)); the author takes no responsibility for clearing other people's rights or obtaining consents that a use may need (section 4(c)); and Creative Commons is not a party to the dedication (section 4(d)).

The Apache-licensed AIQT material

Each contributor grants you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable copyright licence to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the work and those derivative works (section 2). Each contributor also grants you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free patent licence to make, have made, use, offer to sell, sell, import and otherwise transfer the work, covering the patent claims it can license that its contribution necessarily infringes, alone or combined with the work; that patent licence ends for you on the date you start patent litigation against anyone, including a cross-claim or counterclaim, alleging that the work or a contribution in it directly or contributorily infringes a patent (section 3). You may reproduce and distribute the work or derivative works, in any medium, with or without modifications, in source or object form, under the conditions of section 4:

  • give every recipient a copy of the licence (4(a));
  • make modified files carry prominent notices stating that you changed them (4(b));
  • keep, in the source form of any derivative work you distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices from the source form of the work, other than notices that do not pertain to any part of the derivative work (4(c));
  • where the work ships a NOTICE file, include a readable copy of its attribution notices, other than those that do not pertain to any part of your derivative work, in at least 1 of: a NOTICE file, the source or documentation, or a display where third-party notices normally appear; the NOTICE file's contents are for information and do not modify the licence, and you may add your own attribution notices beside them, provided they cannot be read as modifying the licence (4(d)).

You may add your own copyright statement to your modifications, and additional or different licence terms for your modifications or for a derivative work as a whole, provided your use, reproduction and distribution of the work otherwise complies with the licence (section 4). A contribution you submit for inclusion is under the licence's terms, with no other terms, unless you state otherwise; a separate licence agreement you signed with the licensor still applies (section 5). The licence grants no trademark rights beyond reasonable and customary use in describing the work's origin and reproducing the NOTICE file (section 6). Unless applicable law requires otherwise or it was agreed in writing, the work is provided as is, without warranties or conditions of any kind, including title, non-infringement, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, and you alone are responsible for judging whether to use or redistribute it and bear the risks of using the licence's permissions (section 7). Unless applicable law requires it (as for deliberate and grossly negligent acts) or it was agreed in writing, no contributor is liable under any legal theory, whether in tort (including negligence), contract or otherwise, for damages of any kind, direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential, arising from the licence or from the use of, or inability to use, the work, even if told they were possible (section 8). While redistributing the work, you may offer, and charge a fee for, support, warranty, indemnity or other liability obligations consistent with the licence, but only on your own behalf and responsibility, not on behalf of any contributor, and only if you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold each contributor harmless for any liability incurred by, or claims asserted against, it because you accepted those obligations (section 9).

The fonts under the SIL Open Font License

The licence grants permission, free of charge, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify, redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the fonts, under these conditions: neither the fonts nor any of their components, original or modified, may be sold by themselves (condition 1); every copy bundled, redistributed or sold with software carries the copyright notice and the licence, as a separate text file, a readable header, or metadata the user can easily view (condition 2); a modified version may not use a Reserved Font Name without the copyright holder's explicit written permission, a restriction that applies only to the primary font name shown to users (condition 3); the names of the copyright holders and authors may not be used to promote, endorse or advertise a modified version, except to acknowledge their contribution or with their explicit written permission (condition 4); and the fonts, modified or not, in part or in whole, are distributed only under this licence, which does not apply to documents made with them (condition 5).

Key limits: the licence becomes void if a condition is not met (Termination), and the fonts are provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement of copyright, patent, trademark or other right, and their copyright holder is not liable for any claim, damages or other liability, general, special, indirect, incidental or consequential, in contract, tort or otherwise, arising from the use of, or the inability to use, the fonts or from other dealings in them (Disclaimer).

The licence text governs; this is a summary, not legal advice.

Jeff Posluns prefers to publish openly and releases each project under the licence that best fits it: open source licences for software, and public domain or Creative Commons licences for documentation and content.
